Title: Preacher
Series: Rapid City Stories
Designation: Book One of Series, Standalone, NO Cliffhanger
Author: Dahlia West
My Rating: FIVE RIVETING STARS*****
Wow! What a wonderful surprise! This is my first time reading Dahlia West but I can say with utmost certainty, it won't be my last. I loved this book! Preacher by Dahlia West is a beautifully written bad boy romance with one of the most unlikely yet completely unforgettable antiheroes I've ever experienced. I realize that technically, this book is classified as a contemporary bad boy romance but in my opinion, Jack 'Preacher' Prior was not just a bad boy - he was a very bad man, one guilty of great violence and reprehensible acts. In fact, he was so deplorable that he garnered neither friendship nor loyalty from anyone including his own MC brethren who not only betrayed him but also tried to kill him and very nearly succeeded. As I stated earlier, this was my first experience with West's work so going in, I knew nothing about the characters or the fictional world of Rapid City but I had no trouble at all following the story so this book can definitely be read as a standalone. The story is exceptionally well crafted and skillfully written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view from the two protagonists, hellraiser and president of the Badlands Buzzards MC, Jack Prior, and beautiful former barrel racing champion, Erin Walker. The dialogue is well executed, realistic and flows beautifully. But it's the well developed characters that will steal your heart. I was immediately drawn into this story but I had serious reservations about the dark, criminally inclined and often cruel Jack Prior. In the first quarter of the story, Jack appears to be a hopeless, miserable excuse for a human being and totally beyond redemption but never underestimate the influence of a good woman especially one as strong, stubborn and independent as Erin Walker. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers but what started as a criminal act quickly turned into a life changing experience for Jack and Erin, and a love that neither had ever experienced or expected but would save them both from a life of loneliness and despair. Jack was the kind of character a reader loves to hate but show me a man that loves animals (even if he doesn't realize it) and I'll show you a man that can be redeemed with the right motivation and that folks, is the true power of love. In the beginning of the story, Jack and Erin seemed like complete opposites, each coming from totally different worlds. But slowly Jack and Erin realize, along with the reader, they have more in common than they could have imagined with neither ever having experienced real love from anyone including their parents. Erin is a magnificent heroine. She's a strong but kindhearted young woman determined to make it on her own. Her former experience as a rodeo champion and her love for horses has given her the incentive to own and operate her own ranch where she dedicates her life to rehabilitating horses. This is a tough undertaking for anyone but more so for a young woman trying to survive in a field dominated by men and complicated further by having to live in the shadow of her rodeo star father who appears self centered and unwilling to share the spotlight. I fell in love with Erin and admired her tenacity, strength and indomitable spirit. Don't get me wrong, she's no angel but was basically a good person who held firm in her beliefs and dreams even in the face of adversity. Both of these characters were such a breath of fresh air. I even loved the dog and the rooster! (You'll just have to read the books, folks. That's all I'm saying.) No spoilers from me but I will say this....A road weary antihero with a violent past who considers himself to be beyond salvation but is redeemed by the power of love-check! A hardworking young woman with a kind heart and indomitable spirit who is willing to take a chance on the man she loves-check! And a love so strong, it can change their lives and heal them both-check! This is an exquisitely told story filled to the brim with danger, drama, betrayal, suspense, hope, redemption, sweet romance, unconditional love and even a little humor which I found surprising but well done and absolutely hilarious. And did I mention steamy sex? Oh yes, it has that too - that and a whole lot more! What didn't I like about this book? Not a darn thing! What did I love about this story? Everything! Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am but only for adult readers! (This book does contain violence and explicit sex) Will I read this author again? You bet! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read

Preacher Rapid City Stories Volume 1 Dahlia West 9781518812200 Books Reviews

3-3.5 stars

This was a good story. I liked Erin but Jack was...well, he's a real jerk a good portion of the time (at least at first). This is the first story I've read by this author and based on this story I may try more of her work in the future.

Erin is a ranch owner and is starting her own business rehabilitating horses that have been injured/abused. Erin is the daughter of a famous rodeo star but she tries to get out from under her father's reputation, especially since they don't have the best relationship. Erin hasn't had much luck with guys and isn't in a relationship when the story begins.

Jack was the leader of the Badlands Buzzards MC, having taken over the position after his father died. Jack was content in his position until some greedy brothers decide to kill him, thinking they'd get more money if they were in charge. Jack managed to survive but was injured and ended up taking shelter in the barn of a remote ranch.

Erin is boarding a horse that was injured and was sent to her for rehab. She goes out to the barn to check on the horses at night and surprises/is surprised by Jack, who took shelter in the barn. Their first night isn't a good one as he basically takes her captive in her own home because he's injured and thinks she'll call the cops on him. Part of the story is from Jack's PoV so we're able to tell that he doesn't mean all his threats and isn't intending to harm Erin but I still wasn't thrilled with his actions. Jack plans to leave the next day but when Erin runs into some trouble that Jack saves her from, he decides to stay to help her for a bit.

They don't plan it out but Jack ends up sticking around Erin's ranch much longer than expected. They form a connection and although it's not always perfect, it's hard to break and keeps Jack from leaving. Jack tends to vacillate between being a cold-hearted jerk and a sweet guy that is new at emotions but cares deeply. TBH, I found it a bit disconcerting at times because one minute I'd want to slap Jack and the next I wanted to hug him. Erin has some issues with people being too interested in her ranch and wanting to cause trouble for her but they're not a major issue in the story. Jack's past does cause some issues too and there is some drama/angst due to Jack having to "handle" things and it causes a rift between Erin and Jack. Thankfully, Once things are dealt with, Jack and Erin are able to work things out between them and they end the story starting a well deserved HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. I liked Erin very much and thought she was a good heroine. Jack was confusing but by the end, I liked him alright. The story had some imperfections but it was still a good story and I liked it overall. )

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a very good job.
