Every other romance I have read though "Kindle First" has just been awful. So this one was a pleasant change. Not to say is perfect.

I don't want to give too much away so I will just list some of the pros and cons.
PROS:
- Unlike many romance novels, this one had a good story beyond just romance.
- The very beginning was excellent.
- The lead female (Caroline) is a strong woman without being patronizing, or overly "progressive" for her time period.
- The rest of the female cast had successfully varied personalities.
- The book isn't overly long. Which I prefer for this type of story.
- It appears that this book maybe part of a series. Which I didn't realize till the end. This is a good thing. So many of the series I've read make it so painfully obvious by shoehorning in characters that have no right to be there. Every one had a place in this story that made sense.

CONS:
- While the very beginning was good the story kind have hops from scene to scene from there. Making the story feel a little jerky and over edited.
- Many of the actual romance bits feel stuck in as after thought and don't feel part of the natural flow.
- There is supposed to be some mystery regarding who betrayed Caroline's mother but there is very little actual sleuthing to be done. They simply ask the two most likely suspects and boom the guilty party confesses.
- This last point can be a con or pro depending on how "graphic" you like your romances. There are no "naughty bits" in this at all. There are a few short kissing scenes that the characters consider themselves scandalous for due to the time period, but we would think nothing of today.

Overall I liked this well enough to give it 3 stars, but I won't be reading this again.

Journey End Gilded Promises Renee Ryan 9781503950528 Books Reviews

I started this book twice and put it down before continuing it. I just couldn't get into the story.
The story started well enough to grasp the situation but then it bogged to a love story.
Until the real reason Caroline's mother's letters were rejected was revealed and who had done
it did it gather up enough interest to finish the story. But by then I had already guessed whodunit.
Interesting for those who like a turn of the century love story. Just not enough suspense..
This story was going along really well and then it ended....abruptly. If the author got tired and didn't want to finish the book, perhaps they could have quickly included an Epilogue that would have at least let us know how things concluded. There was so much more to tell that was left out.
Another month, another First choice to make. I normally stay away from historical fiction, but this book looked to be the best choice- the descriptions of the others turned me off completely.

The heroine, Caroline is so likeable- you can picture her as the street-wise urchin in London she once was. But at the same time she is elegantly taking on her new family, her grandfather's partner and the social scene in New York. This is an emotional story about forgiveness and love. I will be reading the rest of the series as they come out.
Renee Ryan has crafted a beautifully written story that is both heartwarming and inspiring. Her heroine, Caroline St. James, is a strong woman determined to right a terrible wrong. She travels from England to America to seek justice. The Gilded Age in New York City comes alive in Ms. Ryan's deft hands. I've been to Ellis Island and done tours of the tenements in the Bowery. I was transported back in time to those places as well as to the homes of New York's privileged. Jackson Montgomery was the perfect man for Caroline, strong and virtuous, but with family secrets of his own. I found myself cheering for Caroline and Jackson as they slowly opened up to one another and learned to deal with their past hurts. This inspirational romance is not a "preachy" book, it is a wonderful story about love and the power of forgiveness.

If you're a fan of the Gilded Age or simply looking for a romance that will make you want to sigh with happiness when you read that last page, Journey's End is for you!
WOW! After reading some of the negative reviews about most of the June's First books, I decided to choose this one. Boy am I glad I did. The story is short, fast paced (not dwelling on one subject for long), romantic, and resourceful. It is faith based where our protagonist grows up in London streets with her use- to- be- rich and pampered mom. Her mom is sick but she teaches Caroline all the basic principles that she will need as an adult. She teaches her to read and write, and to read the Bible, even though as an adult, she at times found no use for it. She had to survive on the streets to feed herself and her mom, all the time thinking that her mom's family had rejected her. Her main goal for going to American was revenge, revenge on her grandfather. But right from the beginning we see Caroline with a heart as she befriends an Irish girl, Mary, on the ship. She doesn't want a friend, a friend who is very religious because she wants the feeling of hate to continue in her heart for her grandfather, but with her upbringing, Caroline may be street wise, but she has a heart of gold, as is evident when she also befriends a maid (Sally) in the hotel. This is also a story of love. A love of family, belonging, and closure. I hope that we will find out more about the St. James family and how well Caroline does in her grandfather's business with her now husband, Jackson Montgomery . Also would like to see Sally and Mary evolve.
