When I started reading this book I saw the potential. Unfortunately, as I kept reading I found myself becoming more annoyed. Lily is a young girl who has suffered a horrible loss. Unfortunately she also lost one of her best friends that day, Dean. Dean and her brother were best friends and she was always with them so when Dean left at a time she needed him most, she was broken. Four years passes and Dean finds his way back to the town he really never wanted to return to. He is student teaching at Lily's school and even if she has no interest in seeing him again it is inevitable. What follows is Lily and Dean's story. The two apparently have always loved each other, even though she was only fourteen when he left and he was four years her senior. I had many issues with this story. Everyone in this town was so complacent. Not for one minute do I understand how educators can allow blatant abuse to occur for four years, but how can they then not have any issue with a possible relationship between a student and an educator. Yes the area there was gray, but there should have been no leeway. Further I was frustrated with Lily and her annoying behavior. For the life of me I cannot understand why she felt she deserved what her father put her through. I also was annoyed that she easily allowed Dean back in to her life not once but twice, and honestly I can't see how he was deserving. Lily was too much of a doormat for me to appreciate her as a heroine. As a result I found myself skimming the story at times.
The saving grace in this story was Derek. A total side character, but I found him to be the best. He was a great boyfriend, he looked after Lily, and he was just an all around good guy. I am glad Adley has Derek in her life. I also did like Red. It may have been a little bit much, but I liked the concept behind it and I am not one to discount events like that happening.

Haven from the Storm Storms of Life #1 edition by Sarah Dosher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Haven From the Storm is a wonderful tale of love, pain and learning to let go of the past. The story centers around Lily and Dean. But is added to with characters like Lily’s Brother Easton and Dean’s Grandma Violet. We start the book when a Tornado is hitting the town.
“Easton, stop shaking me. I’m awake, let me go.” I tried to pry his hands off my upper arms. “A big storm is coming. Get up! We have to go to the cellar now.” He turned, picked up my snearkers and threw them at me. “Now, Lily!”
When the storm clears she finds that her brother Easton and her Mom have been taken in the storm. Her life as she knew it GONE. At the Funeral she watches as Dean her and Easton’s best friend walks away from her life for what she thinks is forever.
As the book bounces back and forth currently we find ourselves 4 years later. Dean has decided to come back and make things right.
Dean- She turned to walk away. My heart dropped. My mouth went dry and I didn’t know what to say. “Sunflower?” was the only word I could force out of my mouth. She immediately stopped and looked right into my eyes. “No. You don’t get to call me that,” was all she said as she pointed her finger at me, then continued to walk away.
Dean has a lot of making up to do and boy is he swoonworthy. He tries hard to protect Lily and get her to see he really has changed. He loves her and always has. Everything he has done in his life has been for Lily. She just needs to learn to let him in.
“You dream about this place?” she asked. “Yeah, I dream about it probably more than I should. Don’t you? This is our place, Sunflower Beach. I named you after this beach, it’s only fitting that I dream about it as often as I dream about you.”
“Sunflower, I may have left this town behind, but I never left you. You were still with me, always in my heart, with every step I took. Don’t ever doubt that.”
“I’ll never be complete without you.”
I love Dean’s determination in this book to protect Lily. I also love how Lily is not a weak girl in this book. NO she is strong, independent and can take care of herself. She has had it rough over the 4 years since her mom and Easton passed. She has learned to navigate life to avoid her father. She has even gone as far as making a safe place in her home where her father can’t get to her. I love this line from Dean describing Lily-
“Lily wasn’t like me, she didn’t run. She handled whatever shit life threw her way. She didn’t merely weather the storm, she actively ruled it. Her strength was what made my instinct of avoidance so hard for her to comprehend. She didn’t know how to retreat, she simply overcame”
That statement is so powerful. I love how the author took time to show how Lily survived the storm of her life. The love between Dean and Lily is a love definitely worth fighting for. There are many ups and downs in this book. Will true love prevail or will it be lost to the pain of the past? Can Dean stay and not run when times get tough? Can Lily learn to let the walls down and let Dean in? Go grab this book today and find out!!! I rate this book 5 stars. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
4 Stormy Stars
Warning Overuse of weather words to follow...
Oh My....This book. I read this book while watching radar of tornadoes in Oklahoma, texting my son's roommates hiding under a mattress in Norman OK and still feeling the gripping sadness of the Moore Ok tornado of just a few weeks ago. So to say it was topical and emotional is an understatement.
Lily's life is a storm. She lives in tornado alley and is used to taking shelter. But this time the storm is too fast. She can not hide. The storm continues to rage for four long years for her. She can not click her heels together and wish herself home because "home" is the center of the storm. There is no where and no one to shelter her. She has been whipped in the wind for years.
Dean escaped after the storm. He put the town, the tornado and the loss it brought behind him. He has been in hiding for those same four years. When he returns to town, he opens himself up the damage that remains. He is determined to make things right with Lily. But Lily is over him. Over. Him. Yep. He left her to deal with all the crap that has rained down on her and she is pretty pissed about it.
When Dean decides to not let Lily go, she realizes he has changed. Well isn't that nice? Finally! Dean isn't the only one who has changed. Lily's dad has changed too, he is worse. Way worse. The entire town has taken her off their radar. The Entire Town. How is that possible? Dorothy would be so disappointed in the No Place Like Home motto here.
Lily and Dean have to face abusive, denial, and their own fear of rejection. Will they weather the storm? Love the pun in the title. So please excuse the excessive storm/weather references here. Much like Ms Dosher's writing....I could not resist.
